25 Years Ago, With One Announcement, Everything Changed

BMW. Great For US.

Twenty-five years ago, BMW made an announcement that would change the face — and future — of Spartanburg County. By choosing to locate its first manufacturing facility outside of Europe in Spartanburg, BMW instantly elevated our economy and cemented our position as a home for world-class companies, cutting-edge innovation, and advanced manufacturing.
After an initial pledge of 2,000 jobs and a $600 million investment, BMW has consistently over-delivered. Today, BMW Manufacturing Co. employs nearly 9,000 people, while its 40 in-state suppliers directly employ 21,000 more. And the total investment at the Spartanburg facility has reached $7.8 billion.

Today, Spartanburg and the state of South Carolina is known worldwide as a center for automotive manufacturing innovation and excellence. BMW and Spartanburg are the foundations of that reputation.
