Community Profile

Welcome to Spartanburg County, where residents capture the essence of the term “neighbor.” Southern hospitality flourishes in the homes and is apparent in the faces of community members. Visitors and newcomers are greeted with open arms.

Residents of Spartanburg County embrace their wholesome values, as evidenced by the many volunteers who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of this community and its high standards of education, superior healthcare and unequivocal safety. We think you’ll agree, it’s a great place to do business and call home.

In the beginning

The area now known as Spartanburg County was formed in 1730 when a treaty marking the boundary between the province of South Carolina and the Cherokee Nation was signed. Today the boundary separates Spartanburg and Greenville counties. Settlers included Scots-Irish families from North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Virginia, as well as Indian traders and ranchers.

The county and the city are named for a regiment of soldiers, the “Spartan Rifles,” who teamed with General Daniel Morgan’s troops to defeat the British in the Battle of Cowpens. The battle, recognized as the turning point of the Revolutionary War, is commemorated at the Cowpens National Battlefield.

Internationally known

Today, Spartanburg County is proud to be an internationally-recognized business and cultural center, boasting the highest per capita international investment in the country, according to reports in the New York Times.

Spartanburg’s international business community, with more than 100 foreign firms representing 20 countries, has provided a cosmopolitan atmosphere that mixes Southern hospitality with the culture and traditions of other countries. It’s a true melting pot as many families from Germany, Switzerland, Russia and Korea call Spartanburg home.

We’ve got it all

The amenities and opportunities Spartanburg County offers are wide-ranging – housing, education, healthcare, shopping, recreation and culture. These all blend together, making this community a wonderful place to live. As a matter of fact, Money Magazine called Spartanburg one of the “Four Booming Locales Where You Can Find A Job and Live Easy.”

So, welcome to Spartanburg County, which has an unparallel desire to maintain a comfortable lifestyle yet conviction for progress. And above all, an acute sense of community that keeps residents overflowing with pride and joy.
