Spartanburg, S.C. –The Spartanburg County Commission for Technical and Community Education the governing body of Spartanburg Community College, has named Henry C. Giles, SCC executive vice president of business affairs, as the interim college president effective February 1, 2012. With the upcoming departure of current president, Dr. Para M. Jones – who accepted a position as the president of Stark State College in Canton, Ohio, in December – Giles will fill this role until a new president is chosen for the College.

“With Henry’s 40 years of experience with the College and outstanding performance in his role as executive vice president, the Commission is confident that his appointment will ensure a seamless transition during the presidential search,” explains Mr. Bruce Johnson, chair of the SCC Commission. “Under his leadership, SCC will continue its mission of changing lives and building futures for our students and acting as a catalyst for economic development through innovation, collaboration and excellence in educational programs and services.”

“I am deeply honored to be chosen by the Commission to fill the important role of leading the College during this time of transition,” said Giles. “SCC has a very dedicated faculty and staff, and together we will continue the positive momentum of successful growth that Dr. Jones fostered during her time here.”

Giles has served as the vice president and executive vice president of business affairs at SCC for 18 years. Under his leadership, the College has never received a qualified audit from the Commission’s annual audit or completed a year where expenditures exceeded revenues, and the College has only received favorable audits from the state and federal program audits. Giles was also instrumental in facilitating the successful purchase of the Evan’s Building in downtown Spartanburg – soon to be the location of the new SCC Downtown Campus.

While at SCC, Giles has also held positions as program manager, vice president for development, and vice president for academic affairs, providing him with a diverse and thorough understanding of College operations.

Giles earned a bachelor’s of arts degree in mathematics at Wofford College and a master of arts in teaching degree in mathematics at Converse College. He has served as Chair of the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education’s Chief Business Officers Peer. Giles is also active in the local community, having served in leadership positions on boards and committees with the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce, East Spartanburg Rotary Club, Spartanburg School District 7 School To Work, Spartanburg School District 3 Leadership Council, Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg, and Leadership Rutherfordton Board of Directors.
